What is Bougie or Boujee?

Both “Bougie” and “Boujee” have French origins coming from the word “bourgeoisie”.

Originally bourgeoisie referred to the emerging merchant class with new wealth. Later it represented the middle class, and into the 1700s the term was used to negatively describe someone as materialistic.

Karl Marx used the term to describe the class that had power during the Industrial Revolution.

The term “bougie” became slang during the ’60s and ’70s, sometimes an insult to someone who is pretending to be wealthier and more sophisticated than they are. Bougie in French is also the proper name of a medical instrument.

The word “boujee” was first used in hip-hop music, introducing a new perspective and spelling of “bougie”. This slang term refers to self-made wealth that doesn’t forget it’s humbler roots.

When I hear the word in everyday conversation, to me it says an activity, thing or person is rich, upper class or fancy.
