A favorite of pioneer quilters because it was a great block design for using tiny scraps and it made a beautiful quilt. The Ohio Star was the introduction to the quarter square triangle.
This block is often associated with the story of Mary Leary Langston in Oberlin, Ohio. Mary lost her husband Charles, a prominent black man in Oberlin. Charles and his cohorts were shot during an attempt to start a slave revolution where they were completely outnumbered by the army. His bullet-torn shawl was returned to Mary and some stories tell of her making a quilt from it, perhaps with the Ohio Star block design.
